Community Carbon Reduction: Measurement Methods, Emission Characteristics, and Implementation Pathways

Abstract: Achieving carbon neutrality requires sustained and broadly based carbon-reduction action. Cities are major sources of emissions and therefore bear a substantial share of this responsibility, yet effective pathways for reducing emissions at the community scale remain insufficiently resolved. From the perspective of residents' activities, this study develops a comprehensive carbon-accounting model for urban communities and applies it to five communities in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chongqing, and Quzhou. The results show that socioeconomic factors - including household income, everyday behavior, and residential patterns - and physical-spatial factors - including functional mix, building technologies, and spatial design - have significant effects on community emissions. On this basis, the study proposes five implementation pathways: improving the community microenvironment, adopting appropriate green construction technologies, greening mobility, promoting low-carbon lifestyles and consumption, and strengthening policy support.
